πŸ—ΊοΈ About Biome Atlas

This site publishes independent science journalism on biome biogeography, climate change, Mediterranean ecosystems, dryland ecology. Every article is written by a credentialed researcher and draws on peer-reviewed literature, primary scientific sources, and expert institutional data. Our mission is to make rigorous science accessible, accurate, and engaging for a global readership.

✍️ About the Author

Dr. Elif Yilmaz β€” PhD Biogeography, Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey

Dr. Elif Yilmaz is a biogeographer and ecologist specialising in the distribution, ecology, and climate sensitivity of Earth's major terrestrial biomes. She completed her PhD at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara in 2011 and has since mapped and studied biome transitions across six continents, with particular expertise in Mediterranean ecosystems, dryland biomes, and the effects of climate change on biome boundaries. Dr. Yilmaz has collaborated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II, the WWF Global Biomes Programme, the IUCN, and NASA's Earth Observing System Programme. She draws on satellite remote sensing, long-term vegetation monitoring data, and field-based vegetation surveys to understand how biomes respond to changing climate and land use. Her research has been published in journals including Global Ecology and Biogeography, Nature Climate Change, and Diversity and Distributions. Biome Atlas was established in 2023 to provide authoritative, accessible biogeography journalism.

πŸ“ Editorial Standards

Every article published on this site is based on peer-reviewed scientific literature, data from recognised research institutions (IPCC, NOAA, IUCN, NASA, WWF, WCS, and others), and the author's own research experience. We do not publish opinion, speculation, or content that has not been verified against primary scientific sources.

When scientific findings are contested or uncertain, we represent that uncertainty clearly and cite the range of current expert opinion. Corrections to published articles are made promptly and transparently.
